With a background in performance and dance, Sean went on to earn an Honours Degree with Majors in Fine Art and Political Science from the University of Toronto. After that, he continued his studies in the bilingual Scenography program at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. While studying at NTS, he was offered a position in the design department of the largest repertory theatre company in North America, The Stratford Festival which he began immediately upon completing his studies. He continued to design at the Shaw Festival and major theatres across Canada, eventually shifting focus to an extensive career in film and television. He has been fortunate in his film career to learn on the job with several Oscar nominated ( and winning) Production Designers such as Patrice Vermette, John Myhre, Jim Acheson, David Gropman and Don Burt. His projects have taken him throughout Canada, England and Central Europe. Along the way, he has been honoured with a DGC award, four DGC nominations, A Canadian Screen Award nomination and two Sterling Award nominations.
He has also taught and lectured at several colleges. In 2009, with Pat Flood he designed and curated a retrospective of the work of renowned theatre designer, Cameron Porteous. That show toured to three major venues in Ontario and continued on to the prestigious Prague Quadrennial and published a companion book, Risking the Void: the Scenography of Cameron Porteous.
